Filling earth that is actually fill: screened red soil without debris, roots or expansive black cotton clay. Plinth filling is buried and forgotten, which is exactly why bad material ends up there. Ours is checked before it leaves the source.
Variants
From the site engineer's deskFill in watered, compacted layers of about 200 mm. Flooding a full plinth and hoping it settles is how floors crack in year two.
